Twenty years since the Mapiripán massacre, twenty years of memory
Between the 15th and 20th July 1997 a group of one hundred men who formed part of the paramilitary group United Self-defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) arrived in Mapiripán (department of Meta) in order to commit once of the worst massacres that deeply scarred the history of this Colombian municipality, where it seemed the army was aware and because of this one of the Generals from the armed forces has been sentenced. Land rights in Mapiripan
The Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commison (CIJP) accompanies the Sikuani and Jiw indigenous communities who are affected by extensive palm oil plantations in Mapiripan municipality (Meta department), mainly through training workshops on land and human rights. It accompanies some farmers who are reclaiming their land, including William Aljure, who was displaced from his farmland in Finca Santa Ana, in La Esmeralda (Mapiripan) after he was pressured by neo-paramilitary groups which are present in the area.
