María Ligia Chaverra is an activist in the Afro-Colombian community, facing threats from both sides of the armed conflict in her country. A land rights leader, she has faced intimidation and harassment by armed groups, as well as constantly facing risk of displacement from the Colombian state and military. By establishing so-called Humanitarian Zones, María and other land rights leaders have been able to denounce such attacks and the theft used to displace communities.
